Two 2014 gubernatorial candidates came before the Western Conservative Summit Saturday to pitch themselves as the best person to defeat Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

State Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, and former Congressman Tom Tancredo spoke briefly at Saturday’s session of the three-day conference.

““How many of you are ready to have a conservative governor with experience and leadership to lead this state?” Brophy asked the crowd.

“I am not only running for governor, I am running to oust the incumbent. That is the purpose of what we should all be doing here,” Tancredo said.

Before Brophy and Tancredo spoke, event organizer and Centennial Institute Director John Andrews said that a total of five potential candidates may speak. That list included Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler, Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler and former Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp. Neither of those three spoke at Saturday’s conference but each is currently exploring a run against Hickenlooper.
